How to print a 2×2 inch passport photo on a 4×6 sheet
Made on your own device — nothing is uploaded. The full-size photo file is free; a ready-to-print 4×6 sheet is $3.99. Open the photo maker
How many 2×2 inch or 35×45 mm photos fit on a 4×6 print, how to print at exactly 100% and how to check the size with a ruler.
A 4 × 6 inch print holds exactly 6 photos of 2 × 2 inches with no space between them. The sheet the maker builds gives one of those places to a 1-inch ruler, so you get 5 photos and a way to check the print size. The U.S. DS-11 form asks for one 2 × 2 inch photo printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper.
The maker crops and scales your photo to the official head size, checks the background and tilt, and lets you download only when every check passes.
How many photos fit on one 4 × 6 print
| Document | Photo size | Columns × rows | Space between photos | On the sheet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands passport & ID card | 35 × 45 mm | 4 × 2 | 2 mm | 8 + ruler in the margin |
| South Africa passport | 35 × 45 mm | 4 × 2 | 2 mm | 8 + ruler in the margin |
| Hong Kong (HKSAR) passport | 40 × 50 mm | 3 × 2 | none (edge to edge) | 6 + ruler in the margin |
| Denmark passport | 35 × 45 mm | 4 × 2 | 2 mm | 8 + ruler in the margin |
| United States passport | 2 × 2 in (50.8 × 50.8 mm) | 3 × 2 | none (edge to edge) | 5 + 1-inch ruler in place of one photo |
| South Korea passport | 35 × 45 mm | 4 × 2 | 2 mm | 8 + ruler in the margin |
Printing it at the right size
- Order a standard 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) print at a photo kiosk, a pharmacy photo counter or an online print service, or print it yourself on 4 × 6 photo paper.
- Print at 100% / actual size. Turn off “fit to page”, “fill” or borderless options that enlarge the picture — a print that is scaled even a few percent changes the head size.
- Measure the ruler on the printed sheet. If the 1-inch (25.4 mm) mark is not exactly 1 inch, the print was scaled; print it again with scaling off.
- Cut along the edges of each photo with a straight edge and a sharp blade or a paper trimmer.
Paper and finish
The DS-11 accepts matte or glossy photo-quality paper. Some countries are stricter: GOV.UK asks for plain white photographic paper with no border, and South Korea does not accept photos printed on plain paper. Ordinary office paper from a home printer is not photo paper.

Renewing a U.S. passport by mail on Form DS-82 means attaching one 2×2 inch colour photo on photo paper. A single 2×2 file sent to a kiosk as a 4×6 print is enlarged to fill the print, so it comes out the wrong size — the print sheet puts the photos on a 4×6 at their exact size.
